University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE)

Each year the Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) treats approximately 60,000 inpatients and 240,000 outpatients and manages a total of 1499 beds. The turnover amounts to approximately 550 million euro. Smooth operation of the more than 80 clinics and institutes combined in 14 centers is ensured by almost 6,250 employees, including approximately 1,500 doctors and scientists, 1,950 nurses and therapists, as well as 700 employees in the laboratories and examination areas. The medical program has more than 3,500 students, the dentistry program almost 600.

The hospital was founded in 1884, and its heart is the new central clinic building with 730 beds and 16 operating theatres which was inaugurated in 2009. During its construction the time and cost schedules were fully adhered to (start of construction: fall 2005, building costs: 188 million euro). Simultaneously, the research and teaching departments received modern buildings.

With the annual treatment of approximately 1,000 foreign patients and a resulting turnover of five million euro the UKE is one of the leading German university hospitals in this sector. Foreign patients primarily come to the clinic for stem cell and bone marrow transplants, for treatment of cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, for liver, kidney or cornea transplants, and for treatment of cardiovascular diseases and prostate cancer. They are attended to by the International Office of the UKE, which also serves as the contact point for foreign guest physicians, scientists and students. The UCM and the International Office use their networks in collaboration and benefit from the exchange of information regarding the worldwide healthcare market.
